Variety Radio Online was invited to join the DragonCon press room interview with Paul Blackthorne, Caity Lotz, and Katrina Law.
At theComic-Con 2014 “Outlander” premiere, Katrina Law chats with Access about her return to “Arrow.” What’s in store for Nyssa al Ghul this season? Plus, what is she looking forward to most about seeing “Outlander”?
Nyssa al Ghul (Katrina Law) is coming back to Starling City…and she’s bringing some friends!
At the end of the most recent episode of Arrow, fans were left wondering exactly what Sarah (Caity Lotz) meant when she said she was leaving town to go see “an old friend.” Now the mystery has been officially solved: “She went to go get help,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg says. “Because when you’re fighting an army, you need an army.”
The finale, titled “Unbreakable,” is an all-out war, says Kreisberg. “It’s the Arrow, Canary and Roy and the League of Assassins versus Slade and his Mirakuru army for the city.”
The comic book drama’s closer — which Kreisberg also calls “f—ing insane” — airs May 14.
I’ve added 338 logofree HD screencaps of episode 2×13 entitled Heir to the Demon to our gallery. Enjoy!
Arrow brought to life an iconic comic-book character on Wednesday night as Ra’s al Ghul’s daughter Nyssa came to Starling City in search of Sara — and planted a kiss on her!
Below, executive producers Andrew Kreisberg and Marc Guggenheim reveal the story behind the surprise twist and what Sara being home means for her romantic future.
LOCKING LIPS | The decision to have a romantic relationship between Nyssa and the younger Ms. Lance “was really more about Sara than anything else,” explains Kreisberg. “We thought about this at the beginning of the season. If you watch [Episode] 205, there’s a reference to ‘the beloved’ and ‘you think that’s going to keep you safe.’ We talked about, ‘Does Ra’s al Ghul have a son?’ Then we were like, ‘Could it be Talia?’ We felt like Talia had just been done in the movies.” Ultimately, one of the writers suggested Nyssa, which “felt like something new and different.”
Kreisberg maintains that the pairing isn’t meant to be “salacious.” Rather, “It’s a pretty chaste relationship from what you see on screen,” he continues. “For us, it just touched on a couple of interesting things like the idea that Sara found herself in this terrible world and found this one person who treated her with love and kindness.” And although Sara ends the episode reuniting with Oliver, “We actually specifically avoid using the term ‘bisexual,’” points out Guggenheim. “We didn’t want to label her at all.”
But her past will come back to haunt her: Katrina Law will reprise her role as Nyssa later this season. As for whether Sara and Oliver are a couple now, “That’s actually part of the journey of these next five episodes,” reveals Kreisberg. “Oliver has not had many successful relationships, and part of him and Sara moving forward is [the question of], ‘Is this something that can work given both of our [pasts]?’”
The Heir to the Demon is coming!
Nyssa al Ghul (Spartacus’ Katrina Law), the daughter of infamous villain Ra’s al Ghul, will make her way to Starling City on Wednesday’s episode of Arrow (8/7c, The CW) in an attempt to bring Sara (Caity Lotz) back to the League of Assassins.
“Second to him, she’s one of the most important figures in the League,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told reporters following a screening of Wednesday’s episode. “They sent their first round of minions to come for Sara and that didn’t go so well for them, so now they’re bringing out the big guns. The way Nyssa comes into the story is in a far more provocative and surprising way than the last round.”
Since Talia al Ghul had recently been portrayed by Marion Cotillard in The Dark Knight Rises, the producers decided that taking a look at the lesser-known daughter would bring a fresh perspective to the League of Assassins. “I love the fact that she hasn’t been in any movies,” Law said. “Interpretation is left wide open to the writers and myself. I love that she’s only been in the comic books, I think, a total of 19 times. Everything about her is just wide open.”
Unfortunately for Sara, Nyssa doesn’t plan on taking no for an answer, even going to so far as to kidnap Sara and Laurel’s (Katie Cassidy) mother Dinah (Alex Kingston) to convince her to leave Starling City. “It’s one of her worst nightmares and the hardest thing to happen is for Nyssa to come back,” Lotz said. “When Nyssa does [return], Sara is not sure what she’s going to do and she definitely gets tested.”
“It’s not that the League of Assassins is all evil and bad memories,” Lotz continued. “Her heart is tied into it. They saved her life and rescued her, and made her into who she was. She still does have part of her heart in it. They’re also her family. Her blood family is stronger for her, but it’s not an easy decision. [There’s] definitely a lot of gray area for her.”
Now that’s how you make an entrance!
Fanboys everywhere, prepare to geek out hard-core, because we’ve got your exclusive first look at Spartacus alum Katrina Law in action as Nyssa al Ghul on Arrow. And. It. Is. Awesome.
Nyssa, of course, is the dangerous Ra’s al Ghul’s (the leader of the League of Assassins) equally-as-dangerous daughter, who is sent to Starling City to bring Sara (Caity Lotz), the Black Canary, back into the killer organization’s fold.
We’ve got an exclusive clip from Wednesday’s all-new episode, “Heir to the Demon,” which proves just how lethal Nyssa is. Oliver (Stephen Amell), you’ll definitely have your work cut out for you with this one!
Of the formidable new villain, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg teases, “Second to [Ra’s al Ghul], she’s one of the most important figures in the League. They sent their first round of minions to come for Sara and that didn’t go so well for them, so now they’re bringing out the big guns. The way Nyssa comes into the story is in a far more provocative and surprising way than the last round.”
And while Law performed most of her own stunts as Nyssa, including the entire airport sequence featured in the clip above, she admits that the character’s precision when it comes to fighting due to her rigid training made her a bit nervous.
“She is precision and precise and everything she does has a purpose and an intent,” she explains. “So I tried to make sure my movements were sharp—that was the biggest stress.”
Though Ra’s, who has yet to appear on Arrow, is a well-known character to DC Comics fans, Nyssa is a bit more of a mystery, only appearing in a few comics, a fact Law enjoys. “I love it. I love the fact that she hasn’t been in any movie and the interpretation is left wide open between the writers and myself with what we want to do with even everything down to how she looks and her costume. Everything about her is just wide open,” she says.
And now that we’re meeting his daughter, could viewers finally see Ra’s pay a visit to Starling City soon? Executive producer Marc Guggenheim simply says, “We really can’t comment on when on if you’ll see Ra’s.”
Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg talks about the story of the Lance family before the island. Arrow is all new Wednesday at 8/7c!
