CBS today announced several winter and spring scheduling moves, including the series premieres of RANSOM, TRAINING DAY and DOUBT.
CBS will launch two dramas in February, beginning with TRAINING DAY, premiering Thursday, Feb. 2 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) after PURE GENIUS completes its season order. TRAINING DAY is a crime thriller starring Bill Paxton and Justin Cornwell that begins 15 years after the events of the feature film, about a young, idealistic police officer who is tapped to go undercover in an elite squad of the LAPD where he partners with a morally ambiguous veteran detective. Katrina Law, Drew Van Acker, Lex Scott Davis, Julie Benz, Christina Vidal and Marianne Jean-Baptiste also star.
CBS has given series orders to dramas Training Day, a sequel to the movie; the Dr. Phil-inspired Bull, starring NCIS‘ Michael Weatherly, Jason Katims’ Pure Genius (fka Bunker Hill) and MacGyver, a reboot of the classic series. On the comedy side, the network has picked up the Matt LeBlanc starrer, now titled Man with a Plan and workplace half-hour The Great Indoors starring Joel McHale.
Katrina Law (Arrow) has been cast opposite Bill Paxton in CBS’ drama pilot Training Day, a present-day reimagining of Antoine Fuqua’s acclaimed 2001 feature.
Set 15 years after the film left off, the TV show, written by Will Beall, centers on an idealistic young African-American police officer, Kyle Craig, is appointed to an elite squad of the LAPD where he is partnered with seasoned, morally ambiguous detective Frank Rourke (Paxton).
Law will play Detective Rebecca Lee, an LAPD officer with the LAPD’s Special Investigation Section (S.I.S.). She was rescued from human traffickers by Frank (Paxton) when she was 4 years old and looks up to him as the father she never had. Cast also includes Drew van Acker as LAPD officer Tommy Campbell.
ABC Family has begun production on its Amanda Knox-style drama pilot “Guilt,” and has set the cast, led by Katrina Law, Billy Zane and Daisy Head as the prime suspect.
Head (“The Syndicate”) will play Grace, a young girl American girl living in London who is stunned when she becomes the top suspect in the savage murder of her roommate. Law (“Arrow,” “Spartacus: War of the Damned”) will play her sister Natalie, an attorney who drops everything when Grace becomes a murder suspect. Zane (“Titanic”) has been cast as Stan, Grace’s cocky defense attorney, who revels in conflict and enjoys winning.
The cast is rounded out by Cristian Solimeno (“Rush”), who will play D.S. Bruno, an ambitious Scotland Yard detective sergeant who is determined to get to the bottom of the murder and is immediately intrigued by Natalie; Naomi Ryan (“Guardians of the Galaxy”), who will play Gwendolyn, the crown prosecutor who is heavily involved with the case and shares a complicated history with Bruno; Kevin Ryan (“Copper”) as Patrick, whose sister Molly is the victim, so he vows revenge on her killer; Zachary Fall (“Crossing Lines”) as Luc, Grace’s drug-addicted boyfriend, who also is suspected of Molly’s murder; Simona Brown (“The Casual Vacancy”) as Roz, who was Grace and Molly’s roommate and is involved with shady dealings; newcomer Sam Cassidy as Prince Theo, a member of the royal family who secretly crossed paths with Molly; and Dinita Gohill (“The Last Train”) as Meera, a student along with Molly and Grace who is also a reporter for the university paper.
The soapy hourlong drama hails from writer-exec producers Kathryn Price (“The Game Plan”) and Nichole Millard (“The Game Plan”). Former ABC Entertainment chief Steve McPherson will also serve as exec producer. Gary Fleder (“Kingdom,” “Scorpion”) will direct the pilot, which is a co-production of Sea to Sky Entertainment and BV Family Productions.
Pilot production on “Guilt” begins production this week in Budapest and London.

Next week’s installment of Arrow, titled “The Magician,” will feature a higher than average quotient of the al Ghul family. Not only is it the long-percolating debut of actor Matt Nable as Ra’s al Ghul, it’s also the return of Katrina Law as that character’s daughter, Nyssa al Ghul.
Law debuted as Nyssa in season two’s “Heir to the Demon,” which aired this past February. In the show, Nyssa is a member of the League of Assassins that has a romantic past with Sara Lance (Caity Lotz). Given the major developments early this fall in the show’s third season, there’s plenty for Nyssa to confront.
Written by Wendy Mericle & executive producer Marc Guggenheim and directed by John Behring, “The Magician” — the 50th overall episode of “Arrow” — is set to air 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29 on The CW.
Are there any past characters coming back to Arrow in Season 3? Along the lines of Kelly Hu’s China White? –Alamin
As you may have heard, Katrina Law will soon return as Nyssa al-Ghul, and given what happened to her lover Sara, the LOA badass “absolutely” has some bones to pick, Katie Cassidy told me. “You will see [Nyssa go through] a wide range of emotions,” Cassidy previewed, “but ultimately, through the resentment and negativity, youll get a chance to see [her and Laurel] sort of come to understanding.”
